Things started easy today, as the group left the village of Hopkins, heading towards the
Maya mountains. When they hit the dusty coastal highway, dark clouds filled the sky. Within
a few minutes, it began raining on the poor cyclists, who were soon covered in thick red mud.
Mechanicals problems followed for many of them, including Walker Ferguson, who broke the
collar of his seatpost with still 50 kilometers to go. The Scott USA rider had to finish
his ride standing on his pedals, which cost him more than 30 minutes on the leaders. John
Nobile, from Connecticut, was the hero of the day, with a long solo breakaway. He finished
first, covering the 110 km in 4h 16 min.
The group is once again camped in the middle of the jungle, at the Jaguar Paw resort.
They went swimming in the river and washing their bikes at the same time. Some of them
went caving at the nearby caves, and all enjoyed an excellent meal of rice and beans and
chicken, served in the exotic lodge.
