After yesterday’s appetizer, Day 2 was far from easy, with 150 kilometers to cover, taking riders from the jungle back to sea side, at Hopkins. The first kilometers were on a really rough gravel road, so the group was happy to hit the paved road. The Southern Highway, long known as the worst major road in Belize, is now the best road in Belize, so the going was easy. Heat and humidity were the biggest difficulty and most riders would have preferred the clouds and rain of the previous days.

Roger Troyer, from Belize, took a serious option on the overall G.C. at the mid-race feed zone where the front group had stopped to eat and drink. He decided to carry on alone for the last 80 kilometers or so. This tremendous solo effort gave him a 20 minutes cushion on his closest rivals. He finished that long day in 5 hours 16 minutes. Some riders took as much as 9 hours to complete the course and a few had to take a lift with the sag wagon. All of them were happy to take a plunge in the ocean when they arrived to the lush resort of Jaguar Reef Lodge. After an amazing buffet including Beans and rice and chicken, participants who chose not to upgrade in one of the rooms of the resort got back to the campground installed in a strange place... on the roof of a building. They slept really well, refreshed by the cool breeze blowing from the caribbean sea.
